Engineering the next generation of cell-based therapeutics
The widespread clinical translation and commercialization of cell-based therapies are hampered by challenges related to cell source, viability, potency, safety and scalability. Here, Veiseh and colleagues overview progress in the development of cell-based therapeutics and discuss how biological engineering approaches — including genome editing, synthetic biology and the use of biomaterials — are beginning to address key challenges in the field.

Lipid Deposition Profiles Influence Foreign Body Responses
In article number 2205709, Christian C. Schreib, Omid Veiseh, and co-workers explore how lipid deposition affects the way the body responds to implanted biomaterials. They discover that certain types of phospholipids tend to accumulate on immune-evasive implants, while different sets of fatty acid lipids deposit on immunogenic implants. These lipids directly impact the transcriptome of macrophages found on the surface of the implant materials.
